Literary Canons for an Oral Audience?
Vis sammendrag
The worlds in which the ancient Hebrew and, later, the Greek New Testament canons emerged were predominantly oral. In the Roman Era probably less than 5 percent of the population were able to read complex books like the ones now found in Jewish and Christian bibles. How would it be possible, even desirable, to stage a collection of literature as a symbol for cultural identity and, ultimately, as a vehicle for the production of social authority? Any answer will necessarily be complex. My presentation will focus on one segment in the attempt to address this nexus. I propose the production of scriptural authority needs to be explored as a social rather than a scribal phenomenon. It is the result of complex interaction in what I have elsewhere called canonical ecologies. In the case of the early Hebrew canons, it appears that authority was produced through symbiotic interactions between written (elite) and oral (popular) canonical ecologies. To the scribal community texts had semantic value, but for the oral audience text artefacts were invested with the sense ascribed to them as social memory and through ritual handling of the text artefacts.

This volume represents the final output of a long-standing collaboration by an international and cross-disciplinary team sponsored by the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. It tells the history of human cultural production in the Eastern Mediterranean, rather than the history of specific states or religions. Simultaneously, the volume argues that the agency of local communities is a key to understanding the history of long-term change and cultural production in the Levant. It narrates the story of the crystallization of a type of sub imperial power, illustrated by the canonical discourses associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Canons and the Production of Authority: A Comparative Perspective.
Vis sammendrag
Human societies have a propensity to crystallize rules, standards, and (social) canons in most sectors of social life. There are, for instance, religious scriptural canons like the Bible, the Qur’an or the Five Confucian Classics; educational canons like standard curricula of English or German literature (for different educational levels); cultural canons like the oevre of Shakespeare or Göthe, and political canons like the works of Marx or the ideology of New Public Management (Thatcherism). Despite their huge diversity, these examples would seem to share a number of recognizable characteristics (each of them in different measure and in different ways). For instance, all these canons seem to have developed large quanta of canonical commentary, and they all are curated by dedicated agents, mostly serving in institutions responsible for the curation of the canon. They constitute what I would call canonical ecologies. One most pressing issue about these and other canons is the question of how they contribute to the production of social and political authority. As it turns out, religious scriptural canons may be a good vantage point for discussing this issue, partly because these are often more explicitly formalized than other kinds of social canons, and partly because the issue of authority is usually very explicit in the canonical ecologies that surround religious scriptural canons.

Vis sammendrag
The Religious Studies Project is an international collaborative organization publishing weekly podcasts with leading scholars worldwide on the social-scientific study of religion. On April 6, 2020 they published a nearly one-hour long conversation around a recent volume co-edited by professor Terje Stordalen, TF: Figurations and Sensations of the Unseen in Judaism, Christianity and Islam: Contested Desires (Bloomsbury, 2019). The interview is conducted by Candace Mixon for the RSN, and it features professor Birgit Meyer, Utrecht in addition to professor Stordalen.
The title for the podcast is “Challenging the Normative Stance of Aniconism in the Study of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam”. The RSP editor says the volume brings new and innovative perspectives to the analysis of these three religious traditions, which are so often presumed to be image-unfriendly. It also sheds new light on the afterlife of this figurative cultural heritage in current day Western Europe. Seeing all use, as well as professed non-use, of figurations as part of different aesthetic regimes, the volume pleads for a more critical and nuanced approach to the roles of figurations and sensations in these religious traditions.

I Selma Lagerlöfs bok Jerusalem fra 1901–1902 sporer religiøse visjoner til handling og et sterkt ønske om å bidra til å opprette en utopi på jord.

What Were "Basic Social Units" in the Late Iron Age Sothern Levant?
Vis sammendrag
Any enterprise to explore the interaction between local and trans-local (“global”) forces in the Pre-Modern Levant needs first to define local and trans-local. Arguably, both were more complex and multi-layered than is usually recognized. This presentation focuses on the local end, attempting to identify what were “basic social units” at the time. A social unit is a complex of pragmatic, economic, ideological and political relations perceived as bounded together by those who make up this formation. To qualify as a basic local social unit, the formation should be the lowest unit in the social hierarchy that carried responsibility for three essential tasks: subsistence production, social reproduction, and social self-identification. In the predominantly rural society of the late Iron-Age Levant, these basic social units influenced how people performed and perceived of their lives. Biblical and modern parlance alike tend to take the family as the basic social unit. This presentation argues that families were integrated into the social fields of villages and towns, and that village moral and leadership extended into family spheres. Towns and villages should be recognized as political powers with separate institutions and leadership, and identifiable interests and agendas. Trans-local agents like kings, traders, warlords, or religious elites had to negotiate “central” power with such local polities – in the Levant as in much earlier Mesopotamian cultures – even though the (elite) biblical record rarely recognizes this state of affairs.

Centrum för teologi och religionsvetenskap is a research institution for theological and religious studies on a high international level. The evaluation reveals an increase in high quality research output, substantial societal engagement, wide knowledge dissemination, extensive external funding, educational programs based on research, good doctoral education with solid recruitment, strong international networks, highly motivated and hard-working staff, instruments for maintaining good collegial interaction, and access to a library with formidable services. Still, CTR is facing some challenges, and may be facing more in the years to come. The most serious challenges pertain to economic and structural conditions along with academic tradition pushing towards individualization and fragmentation of the CTR research environment. Related to this is a slowly waning ability to support early-career scholars. This threatens the renewal of CTR research strengths. Other challenges relate to CTR’s ability to strategic action, due to a lack of unbound resources for research, and to the need to establish more strategic publication patterns. This report identifies points of action that could be considered for implementation to help prepare for these challenges and continue improving upon CTR’s excellence.
