Sigmund Olaf Plytt Mowinckel fikk sitt internasjonale gjennomslag fikk han med avhandlingsserien Psalmenstudien (1921–24, seks bind), som på avgjørende vis kom til å prege den faglige diskusjonen om den bibelhebraiske salmeboken. En videre omtale av Mowinckels forskning, skrevet av hans etterfølger Arvid S. Kapelrud, finnes i Store Norske Leksikon.
I den første tiden etter at Mowinckel-forelesningen var instituert var Mowinckel-foreleserne etablerte forskere med topp internasjonal anerkjennelse. I de senere år har fakultetet innlemmet Mowinckel-forelesningen i fagmiljøets arbeid med å utforme en bibelforskning som er relevant for kirke og samfunn i det 21 århundre. Derfor inviteres nå også dyktige yngre forskere med relevante faglige profiler.
Mowinckelforelesningene blir i etterkant publisert i Studia Theologica.
