First course on Jesus and Muhammed at UiO

For the first time at the University of Oslo, and probably at any university in Norway, Jesus and Mohammed and their role in the formation of modern identities will be studied as a part of the same course. The course is held at the Theological Faculty under the auspices of the master-level program: Religion and Society.

Jesus and Muhammad are symbol characters for each world religion, and are often pitted against each other in religious clashes. In this seminar, we will attempt a more dialogic comparison of presentations of Jesus and Muhammad as historical figures who also have a role as role models for current religious identity.

Professor Halvor Moxnes at the Theological Faculty will lecture about the historical Jesus and Jesus' significance for modern identities. PhD student Nora Sunniva Eggen, Department of Culture Studies and Oriental languages will lecture on Muhammad. Nora Eggen has published a book about Muhammad, and an introduction to the text and the tradition of interpretation of the Koran. Professor Oddbjørn Leirvik, the Theological Faculty is responsible for a presentation of comparisons between Jesus and Muhammad in recent research.

The course is held Tuesdays at. 12:15-14:00, starting August 19th.
