Short abstract
There are multiple conflict stories in the gospels concerning Torah laws, wherein Jesus expressed strong opinions. Many of these debates centered around issues of purity and Sabbath observance. Nevertheless, Jesus's teachings primarily focused on the imminence of the kingdom of God, with seemingly little emphasis on the observance of ritual laws. What role did the Torah laws play in Jesus's teachings about the Kingdom? And to what extent were his teachings on halakhic issues motivated by the study of the Torah?

Cecilia Wassen is professor of the New Testament at Uppsala University. Her areas of research includes the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament, with a special focus on apocalypticism, meals, gender, and laws of purity.
