He was trained in comparative religion and literary studies but he has gradually become ‘Islamicized’ over the years, eventually specializing in Qurʾānic studies. His initial training in literary studies has come full circle as he often applies comparative approaches and literary theory in his work on the Qurʾān and the Islamic tradition.
