Werner Jeanrond travels to Canada to receive his honorary doctorate from Regis College at the University of Toronto later this fall.
"That Regis College, with its Roman Catholic and Jesuit orientation, decided to propose me for such an honour touches me deeply," Jeanrond says.
Jeanrond explains that in his theology he has tried to serve three publics at once: the church, the academy, and society at large.
"Over the years, my frequent and persistent calls for urgent church reform have met with the occasional disapproval, in particular from within my own church tradition. Therefore, the recognition of the emancipatory ambition of a theology of love for the life of the church as well as for the lives of all people concerned with questions of God, of truth, and of global co-operation, justice and peace gives me great joy," he says.
Jeanrond now looks forward to visit the University of Toronto, where in addition to receiving his honorary degree he will give the Chancellor's Lecture on “Faith in a Troubled Church and a Fragmented World” on November 24.
